Barbie is back and better than ever, but it’s not the Barbie that many of us know and love.
This is Socality Barbie and she is killing Instagram, one hipster filter at a time.
In a mockery and an ode to what social media has become, Socality Barbie is showcases her life as she travels around the country, eats ice cream from some of the best shops and enjoys the beach.
This fascinating and captivating Instagram page is run by a wedding photographer in Portland, Oregon, who wishes to remain anonymous so to preserve Socality Barbie’s authenticity.
She created the Instagram a little over three months ago to poke fun at the excessive use of hashtags in photos on Instagram. “People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” she says. “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’”
The clothes used for the doll are all handcrafted and many of the locations the doll goes to are real, with a few being photoshopped.
Currently Socality Barbie has close to 100,000 followers. “I think it’s because she’s so relatable,” the photographer says. “Either your Instagram looks just like hers or you know at least one person whose Instagram does.”
The photographer understands why pages that feature people in extravagant locations seemingly having the time of their lives is so appealing. “I get it, it’s pretty to look at,” she says. “But it’s so dishonest. Nobody actually lives like this. And it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring.”
