Terminator Killer Robots To Be Used on Battlefield?
If you’ve ever watched iRobot or Terminator you have seen firsthand what happens when you create killer robots that become unstoppable.; The fact of the that matter is whether we like it or not that movie is slowly becoming a reality…or is it?
At the recent United Nations meeting in Geneva, lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS), also known as killer robots. was a topic of discussion. While semi-automated weapons such as drones have been used by countries, technology is moving at a rapid pace making those drones look like play toys to what’s on the horizon.
The four day meeting which took place on April 13 – April 17 touched on the subject of legality of LAWS, protocols to restrict their use and calls for the banning of killer robots by countries like Cuba and Ecuador.
Counties such as the United Kingdom are openly opposed to the ban and believe that unmanned robots can potentially decrease the number of civilian casualties in future battles. However, some countries speculate as to whether robots can distinguish civilians from soldiers. Stuart Russell, an artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics expert expressed how far along face and gait recognition by AI has come, “it is now at ‘superhuman’ levels.”
While the debate still rages on, it was a step in the right direction on the future of warfare.
